Let's Talk Baseball
Every week, husband and wife team Ron & Jill Wolforth (www.TexasBaseballRanch.com) talk, debate and argue with each other and the experts about America’s Favorite Pastime. It’s all about baseball – Big Leagues, Youth, on the field and behind the scenes. Is the coach of your kid’s baseball team driving them too hard? Or is Dale Sveum not driving those Cubs hard enough? Hear advice on good nutrition – and about the latest “non-steroid steroid” in circulation. Catch it all here with the Wolforths, America’s “First Family of Baseball”.

It's Christmas week and things are anything but "quiet as a mouse" at the Texas Baseball Ranch.  The Ranch hosted the 15th Annual Ultimate Pitching Coaches Boot Camp recently and it was again a huge success. On this week's show, Coaches Ron & Jill Wolforth give a quick recap of the major "takeaways" of the four-day symposium.

If you rember the Atlatnta Braves of the 1990's and early 2000's, you'd agree they were a team built to win the 162 game marathon and did it better than anyone in MLB history.  Yet, they only won one World Series during that time.  In retropsect they were not designed to win in playoffs. Flash forward to 2014, gone are the Dodgers, Angels and Orioles, teams specifically built to win the division.  Remaining are the Royals and Giants, teams seemingly taylored for the urgency of playoff baseball.  On this week's show, Coaches Ron & Jil Wolforth discuss and ponder the topic "What exactly are you 'built' for?"

In the Classroom Segment they examine the "mechanics-a-holic".  They'll discuss the signs of this affliction and see if it fits you or the players with whom you work.

In the news we hear every day how people and systems let us down.  In the world of sport we have icons such as Tom Brady, Clayton Kershaw and Mike Trout being criticized severely for underachievement.  So for us, the mere mortals who are simply trying to develop, grow and advance in levels, what should we do?  Where should we look?  What strategies should we use?  On this week's show Coaches Ron & Jill Wolforth will discuss this topic.

In the Classroom Segment they are going to address the concept of "Down time or taking time off" and what that might mean to you.

A new book recently came out from Mitchell Zuckoff titled "13 Hours".  It is a harrowing inside account of what really happened in Benghazi. The overall lesson from the book, from Coach Wolforth's perspective, is how we make very poor, unwise and inefficient decisions when we get distracted or off course.  In Benghazi the distractions were primarily geo-policitcal.  In the world of sports and especially in our own personal development, those distractions, although usually not geo-political, can be just as detrimental to growth and development.  On this week's show coaches Ron & Jill Wolforth will discuss the book and apply its lessons to baseball/softball training and development.

Then in the Classroom Segment they will continue their discussion on "Off-Season Strength and Conditioning" with this weeks focus on the common mistakes made by many programs.

Things in our culture today seem to change so quickly, in fact, sometimes those changes can be detrimental to the well being and development of an athlete.  For example, in baseball, Perfect Game and travel/select baseball have grown exponentially over the past five years.  Some of the changes have been beneficial to the development of many young athletes while some of it has been downright scary.  On this week's radio show Coaches Ron & Jill Wolforth discuss when parent's must learn to say NO!  Learning to say No may save the physical AND mental health of your child.

In this week's "Classroom Segment" they will talk about the keys to off-season strength development.

Recently a High School baseball team was eliminated from their state playoffs, not because they lost on the field, they actually won.  They were ruled ineligible and had to forfeit the game.  Did this team use an ineligible player; either he failed to meet his academic requirements or there were some irregularities on where he lives, in essence a possible recruiting violation?  No, this team's sin, taking BP with wiffle balls prior to the game.  On this week's show Coach Wolforth and Jill use this story to offer an opinion on the state of youth sports today in America.
